Abdul Rahman Embong, PhD, is Emeritus Professor in Sociology of Development, and until January 2018, was Principal Fellow at the Institute of Malaysian and International Studies (IKMAS), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. He is author of many books, some of his most important single-authored works being, State-led Modernization and the New Middle Class in Malaysia (2002); Negara-bangsa: Proses dan Perbahasan (The Nation-state: Processes and Debates) (2006; 2nd ed.); Malaysian Studies: Looking Back Moving Forward (2010); and Melangkaui 2020 Ke Arah 2050: Menangani Cabaran Baharu Integriti Negara (Malaysia Beyond 2020: Managing New Challenges of Integrity) (2017).

Andrew Aeria, PhD, was formerly Associate Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), and currently a freelance researcher. He is an Executive Committee Member of GERAK (in English, it is known as the Malaysian Academic Movement).

Chin Yee Whah, PhD, is Professor in Economic Sociology at the School of Social Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia. His research focus in on culture and entrepreneurship especially among Chinese business, and how they establish networks and cooperation with non-Chinese businesses. His single-authored book is, Budaya dan Keusahawanan Cina di Malaysia (Culture and Entrepreneurship among the Chinese in Malaysia), first published by Penerbit UKM in 2003, and has been reprinted several times.

Evers, Hans-Dieter, PhD, is Emeritus Professor of Development Planning and Senior Fellow, Center for Development Research (ZEF), University of Bonn (Germany). He is also Visiting Professor at the Institute of Malaysian and International Studies (IKMAS), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, where he previously held the Pok Rafeah Chair. His current research is concentrated on the sociology of knowledge and on maritime studies. His forthcoming book, edited together with Rahman Embong and Rashila Ramli is called Connecting Oceans: Malaysia as a Nusantara Civilization, UKM Press.

Faisal Hazis, PhD, is Associate Professor in Political Science and Senior Fellow at the Institute of Malaysian and International Studies (IKMAS), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. He is an Executive Committee Member of GERAK (in English, it is known as the Malaysian Academic Movement).

Lai Suat Yan, PhD, PhD is a Senior Lecturer at the Gender Studies Program, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University Malaya (UM). Her background is at the intersection of gender, development and religious studies. Her research interests include gender equality at the workplace, gender violence (in particular rape and sexual harassment) and gender, religion and social change.

Lee Hock Aun, PhD, is a political scientist who is currently a Senior Fellow at the Yusof Ishak Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS), Singapore. He is an Executive Committee Member of GERAK ( in English it is known as the Malaysian Academic Movement).

Menkoff, Thomas, PhD, is Professor of Organisational Behaviour & Human Resources (Education) at the Singapore Management University. His research interests include themes such as managing knowledge and innovation in organisations; human capital and leadership development; Asian entrepreneurship and ethnic Chinese in Asia; and knowledge governance, development and knowledge economy. He is co-editor of a volume with Hans-Dieter Evers and Chay Yue Wah: Governing and Managing Knowledge in Asia. Singapore and London: World Scientific 2005, 2nd edition 2010.

Mulyadi Guli, PhD, is a civil servant from the Enrekang Residency, South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. He recently obtained his PhD at the Institute of Malaysian and International Studies (IKMAS), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

Sity Daud, PhD, is Associate Professor in Political Economy at the Centre of Policy and Global Governance, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and currently Deputy President of the Malaysian Social Science Association.

Rashila Ramli, PhD, is Professor of Political Science and formerly Director of the Institute of Malaysian and International Studies (IKMAS), Universiti Kebangsaan Malayia. She is currently President of the Malaysian Social Science Association.

Sarjit Singh, PhD, is Associate Professor in Social Anthropology at the Faculty of Human Ecology, Universiti Putra Malaysia. He is a life member of the Malaysian Social Science Association.

Syed Husin Ali, PhD, was Professor of Sociology at the Department of Anthropology and Sociology, Universiti Malaya until his retirement in 1990. A highly respected senior social scientist, he is a prolific writer, and has authored many books, including Malay Peasant Society and Leadership (1975), Poverty and Landlessness in Kelantan, Malaysia (1983); Ethnic Relations in Malaysia: Harmony and Conflict (2008); and The Malays: Their Problems and Future (2008). He was President of the Malaysian Social Science Association between 1980-1990 soon after he was released from detention without trial for six years.

Syed Imad Alatas, BA. currently works at the Middle East Institute in Singapore where he helps to oversee the internship programme, the Institute’s publications and social media. His research interests include gender and Islam in Singapore and Malaysia. Imad hopes to pursue his Master’s Degree in gender sociology in the Fall of 2019.

Zaharom Nain, MA, is Professor of Media and Communication Studies at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC). His main area of expertise is in the sociology of communications and the political economy of the media. He is Chairman of GERAK (in English, it is known as the Malaysian Academic Movement).

Zamali Midun M.Eng, was a practising consulting engineer for many years and has since retired. After studying and obtaining his social science degree post retirement, he registered for his Ph.D. degree in development studies at the Institute of Malaysian and International Studies (IKMAS) Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. He is expected to complete his PhD by early 2019.
